Newsflash: A's GM Hamlet Indecisive Again
2006-11-08 13:05
by Ken Arneson

The A's have lost another managerial candidate to another team acting more quickly and decisively. The San Diego Padres have hired Bud Black as their new manager.

Billy Beane could not be reached for comment. Witnesses report that Beane was last seen wandering around muttering, "To hire or not to hire; that is the question..."

In other news:

  • The armies of Gerenbras are marching on Oakinore.

  • Gerald Palaertes is leaving Oakinore to join Lou Polonius

  • Rosenblack and Washingstern are dead.

  • Old King Macha refuses to explain the details of the events that led to his departure, but notes of the events that triggered this drama:

    "But that I am forbid
To tell the secrets of my prison-house,
I could a tale unfold whose lightest word
Would harrow up thy soul, freeze thy young blood,
Make thy two eyes, like stars, start from their spheres,
Thy knotted and combined locks to part
And each particular hair to stand on end."

"There is something rotten in the Coliseum parking lot."

"That's because you're down-wind of the tire factory. Here, turn toward the Sunshine Biscuit Factory."

"Aaaaah... that's much better. Say, Forstatio... why are we wearing pantaloons?"

"Beats me, boss."

Why doesn't Beane just name himself manager? Why is this not an option?

4 Because Beane is smart enough to realize he'd make a terrible, awful, horrible manager. He'd be bad because of the same obsessive impatience that made him a terrible player.

Beane gets too emotional with play-to-play decision making. He has enough trouble watching games live even from the distance that the GM position affords him.

Is Beane waiting until all of the higher profile candidates are hired to justify hiring Bob Geren to the fans? It doesn't make that much sense, but it's all I can think of. Unless Beane is waiting to drive down the next manager's salary. Hmm.

Following the Hamlet script, Wolffius, having dispatched King Macha to a better world, would usurp the manager position himself. However, I can't decide which A's player should play the part of Queen Gertrude?

In the end, Wolffius and Hamlet end up bankrupting each other, and Gerenbras lays claim to team ownership.

Something is rotten in the state of Califormark.

I'm not sure who Queen Gertrude would be but, given the self-destructive histrionics, I'm positive that Milton Bradley is Ophelia.

To Beane, or not to Beane...That is the question.

Whether tis nobler to suffer the slings and arrows of Joe Morgan, or to take arms against a sea of...

Yup, that's all I remember.

If Geren is such a managerial prospect, why aren't other managerless teams interested in him? I already know the answer, but it was worth asking.

The A's new mamanger: Billy Geane

Oops. Professor spelled manager wrong in the above comment.

Mmm. Interchangeable, managers are. Worry should you not.

5. Ok, well that makes sense. It's been a while since I read moneyball, I forgot that Beane is a maniac during game time.

Ok, then answer me this, smart guy. If Beane's so good a running an organization, especially one that can develope young talent that conforms to his ideas, why can't he develope a managerial candidate that can conform to his ideas?

Shouldn't he have found some schlub he likes from his playing days and groomed him in the A's minor league system for the past couple years, so he'd have a replacement ready now.

Its kinda funny how Beane seems to find it easier to replace MVP's and Cy Young award winners than managers.

15 Bob Geren is the "groomed" candidate.

And the number of managerial candidates that have accepted other jobs before the A's could make an offer has now grown to three. Manny Acta is apparently going to take the Nationals' job.

On the off chance you haven't seen this yet, the courting of the high-tech fan has begun in Oakland.

Maybe Beane's looking for that special someone who {{hearts}} Fremont?
