MLB Heavyweight Champion

If MLB champs were decided like boxing: beat the champ, and you're the champ.

The 2008 season started with the Red Sox as champs. They were beaten by the A's, who were beaten back by Boston, who were then swept by Toronto, who lost to Oakland, who lost to Cleveland, and so on, until we reached our current champion.

The Heavyweight of the Year is the team that wins the most title bouts at the end of the season.

Newton's Third Law Of Spring Training
2007-03-17 16:32
by Ken Arneson

For every Rich Harden, there's an equal and opposite Joe Kennedy.

Kennedy gave up nine runs in 2 1/3 innings today, his fourth straight a-clobberin'. This is no Gaussian slump. It's either a Gomes or a Crosby or a Blass. Something is clearly out of whack here.

Starters ERAs so far:
Rich Harden: 1.04
Dan Haren: 5.40
Joe Blanton: 9.00
Esteban Loaiza: 10.12
Joe Kennedy: 20.48

But hey, don't fret your little head none, 'cuz ERAs don't matter, wins do. It all starts with heart, and Joe Blanton is a tough son-of-a-gun out there.

Back on the happy side, Rule 5 pick Jay Marshall is making a good case for sticking around. He followed Kennedy's disastrous outing with two perfect innings. His ERA this spring is 2.89. In fact, the entire A's bullpen, with the exception of Justin Duchscherer (who is expected to pitch for the first time tomorrow) has been lights out this spring. Kiko Calero, Alan Embree, Huston Street and Jay Witasick have yet to yield a run in a combined 20 innings of work. They're making Chad Gaudin, who has yielded one run in six innings of work, look bad in comparison.

I have two openings in a very casual head-to-head Yahoo fantasy baseball league.

Update: Looks like the openings are filled.

I snapped up one of the spots in the league, hope you don't mind...

I grabbed the other one. I was looking for a second league to join, so I'm glad that you posted this.

1 And now, the battle for supremacy amongst Catfish Stew contributors will be fought and decided on a very casual battlefield.

I propose that a cheap and meaningless trinket be awarded to whatever member of the Catfish Stew family of contributors winds up finish the highest in this league. And so, just as William Chase Temple donated the Temple Cup as a reward to the winner of a meaningless, not-at-all seriously contested series between the top two National League teams in the 1890s, so will I put up a similarly uncoveted trophy for this enterprise.

And yes, Jay Marshall has been fan-tastic this spring, and I shall weep copious tears if he is returned to his ancestral homeland.
