MLB Heavyweight Champion

If MLB champs were decided like boxing: beat the champ, and you're the champ.

The 2008 season started with the Red Sox as champs. They were beaten by the A's, who were beaten back by Boston, who were then swept by Toronto, who lost to Oakland, who lost to Cleveland, and so on, until we reached our current champion.

The Heavyweight of the Year is the team that wins the most title bouts at the end of the season.

A Game of Inches
2005-09-03 17:12
by Ken Arneson

I went to the game today. The A's lost, 7-0, but the game was much closer than that. Here's the play of the game, in the seventh inning:

If Hideki Matsui doesn't beat out this double play ball, the A's head to the bottom of the seventh trailing 1-0. Instead, a walk, a single, and a homer by Jason Giambi followed, and the game was suddenly out of reach.

I'm not quite sure how that didn't become a double play. Matsui hit a rocket. Perhaps Scutaro was too slow getting over to second base? I don't know, I didn't see a replay. Looking at this picture, I still don't know how Matsui beat it out.

So it goes. More pictures later...

Wow! That is a fantastic baseball picture. The runners reaching base, the ball seemingly ahead of the runner, the umpire right there.

I seem to recall Ellis not really making the best of tosses to Scutaro, which probably caused him to take something off the throw. That, coupled with Matsui's sprint, put the kabosh on the DP.

Great photo.

Heh. Ken, I must have been sitting right near you. That's the same angle I had at the game...
