MLB Heavyweight Champion

If MLB champs were decided like boxing: beat the champ, and you're the champ.

The 2008 season started with the Red Sox as champs. They were beaten by the A's, who were beaten back by Boston, who were then swept by Toronto, who lost to Oakland, who lost to Cleveland, and so on, until we reached our current champion.

The Heavyweight of the Year is the team that wins the most title bouts at the end of the season.

Marco! Photos!

Wow.  I'm not sure if this was the most happily shocking ending to a ballgame I've ever witnessed in person--after all, I saw Ramon Hernandez win an extra-inning playoff game with a bunt single--but it's certainly not one I'll ever forget.

I'm still wading through my photos from today's game, but here's a little something to tide you over:

More photos here.

You likely could not have asked the players and umpire to pose in those stances.

But it's amazing to see three different emotions in one shot.

Scutaro's joy
Rivera's dismay
The third base umpire's nonpartisan signal for a homer.

All ninth inning some very big and very loud yankee fans were ragging on us A's fans in Section 227...until that 0-2 swing (I KNEW it would be fair) and Marco's magical dance around the bases with us fans jumping, hugging, shouting and high-fiving for a good 20 minutes.

Those yankee fans mysteriously disappeared...

Seems that the A's were concerned about Harden at least an inning before he was actually pulled. It looked like he was insisting he was fine. (No I don't have bat ears, that's just how it looked.) I hope it's nothing serious.

I was definitesly concerned that Bradley wasn't well enough to play. April 15 is his birthday, and he has hit homers on his birthday before. Also, he had planned to wear Jackie Robinson's number today. I had thought they'd kept him out since Tuesday in order to have him able to play today, so it doesn't look great.

1 "You likely could not have asked the players and umpire to pose in those stances."

Too true. I remember about a year ago, Real Sports did a feature on the Sports Illustrated photographer who, among other things, shot that Ali-Liston photo where Ali is standing over Liston post knock-out. And he observed how that photo could not have looked better if he asked everyone -- Ali, Liston, the ref, the folks in the front row -- to pose exactly as they did. Also he noted that he could never hope to recreate such a photo -- because they allowed smoking in arenas in those days, that created the blue glow at the top of the color image.

Which is a round-about way of saying, nice work, Ken.

Well, if you gave me a choice, I'd move the umpire further towards third base, so I could crop out all the shoes at the top of the image. It's not quite a blue glow I got going there.

Just perfecto. Good separation. Says a lot. Not a fan of rapid fire, but if you got the pitch, the hit (from Mo's perspective/NYT had the hitter and Jorge), the reaction to the ball heading to the fair pole, that would be pretty cool. Not that what ya got ain't great.

Just looked at the split. Great, also. Sorry. Just terrific.

Wouldn't ya like to sit with the pros?
