MLB Heavyweight Champion

If MLB champs were decided like boxing: beat the champ, and you're the champ.

The 2008 season started with the Red Sox as champs. They were beaten by the A's, who were beaten back by Boston, who were then swept by Toronto, who lost to Oakland, who lost to Cleveland, and so on, until we reached our current champion.

The Heavyweight of the Year is the team that wins the most title bouts at the end of the season.

Walk-off Marco
2007-04-16 00:50
by Ryan Armbrust

Since Marco Scutaro joined the A's in 2004, he's had no less than eight "walk-off" events -- that is, he's won the game in the last at-bat for Oakland eight times in three years.

Make that nine.

So that's how a rather dramatic change of events looks on paper.

After last night's dinger against one of the greatest closers of all time, Marco is responsible for an astounding nine walk-offs in just 380 games. Since 2000, the much heralded David Ortiz leads the world in walk-offs with 15, but there's an underrated utility player in the East Bay that's charging up behind him. From 2004 to date, Marco has nine walk-offs, while Big Papi has ten -- in almost 100 more games played.

Here's the complete list of Marco's miracles:

  • 2004-06-26 - Marco breaks a 7-7 tie with a two-out single to right field in the bottom of the tenth inning against Jim Brower of the Giants.
  • 2004-08-25 - In a scoreless game against the Orioles, Scutaro knocks a three-run homer off of B.J. Ryan.
  • 2005-04-16 - Scutaro bunts, Scot Shields throws the ball away, and Nick Swisher scores from first.
  • 2005-04-27 - Marco pokes a game-winning single into left field against the ChiSox closer, Dustin Hermanson.
  • 2005-06-15 - Against his old club, the Mets, Scutaro breaks open a scoreless tie with a line drive to center field off of the ageless Roberto Hernandez.
  • 2005-07-27 - In the 10th inning, with two outs, Scutaro hits a single against the Indians' David Riske. Game over, A's win.
  • 2006-04-04 - After a shellacking by the Yanks on Opening Day, Scutaro singles home a run off of Scott Proctor.
  • 2006-09-22 - 12th inning, A's vs. Angels, score tied at four. Marco Scutaro lines an 0-2 Francisco Rodriquez pitch to center field, and the A's magic number drops to 2.
  • 2007-04-15 - On Tax Day, Scutaro hits a three-run homer off of Mariano Rivera when the A's are down by two, with two outs, with two strikes. It doesn't get much better than that.

He has to have the most walk-offs per at bat in MLB history (minimum 1000). Can anybody figure this out?

You could only do this for the "Retrosheet" era and that would be from 1956-2006, excepting 1999.
