MLB Heavyweight Champion

If MLB champs were decided like boxing: beat the champ, and you're the champ.

The 2008 season started with the Red Sox as champs. They were beaten by the A's, who were beaten back by Boston, who were then swept by Toronto, who lost to Oakland, who lost to Cleveland, and so on, until we reached our current champion.

The Heavyweight of the Year is the team that wins the most title bouts at the end of the season.

Quite The Way To Win
2007-06-20 21:13
by Ken Arneson

Edwin Encarnacion tries to catch a foul ball...

...but doesn't quite reach it.

Eric Chavez and Bobby Crosby try to field a ground ball...

...but don't quite reach it.

Mark Kotsay tries to score from second on a single by Nick Swisher

...but doesn't quite make it.

Josh Hamilton tries to rob Jack Cust of a two-run homer...

...but doesn't quite reach it.

Encarnacion tries to steal second base...

...but doesn't quite make it.

Former A's prospect Marcus McBeth tries to field a squibber off the bat of Crosby...

...but can't quite reach it.

Brandon Phillips tries to catch a flare by Mark Ellis...

...but doesn't quite reach it.

Eric Chavez, after earlier trying to hit home runs down each foul line and having them not quite stay fair, tries to drive in the lead run with one out and the bases loaded in the eighth...

...doesn't quite hit a home run, but does hit a sacrifice fly to give the A's the lead. A's hold on to win, 5-3.  Dan Haren wins his ninth game of the year, while McBeth, who yielded the not-quites to Crosby and Ellis, suffers the first loss of his major league career.
