Look! An Injured Guy! Grab Him!
2007-04-27 17:25
by Philip Michaels

As noted by eagle-eyed reader For The Turnstiles in the comments section of this post, Billy Beane has headed our calls for action and acquired a player via trade. And what a trade!

The Oakland A's today acquired outfielder Chris Denorfia from the Cincinnati Reds in exchange for two players to be named later and cash considerations. Denorfia was on the Reds 60-day Disabled List and will be moved to the A's 60-day DL.

Denorfia adds important depth to our disabled list.

So I take it the new CBA eliminated the rule that said a player couldn't get traded while on the DL.

1 My understanding is that there never has been such a rule. It's more like an urban legend.

"Krivsky said one of the two players the Reds are receiving likely will be announced within the next three days. He indicated both were close to being Major League-ready."

Hmm...what names qualify as "close to major-league ready"? Brad Halsey? Jeremy Brown? Santiago Casilla? Shane Komine?

How about Mark Kiger?

He made Baseball-reference.com add extra code to their Oakland 2006 roster.

Kiger also has a Retrosheet ID, but no page.

Halsey would certainly make sense. He's disgruntled, and the A's have Dan Meyer (and probably also Dan Denham) set to join the rotation in Sacramento. And the delay could be because they're waiting for results from his MRI.

By the way, I'm being treated by Larry Davis for my eagle eyes. Wish me luck.

I am guessing it is going to be Brown, because he will never get his shot in Oakland.

Kiger is no longer in the A's system.

Maybe Charles Thomas or some other AAAA player too.

How about Jared Burton? The Reds picked him in Rule 5. He is on their DL.

10 Yeah, that makes sense. It would explain the second guy who isn't going to be named this weekend.

But Kiger's legacy will be great.

6 Being treated by Larry Davis, huh? You'll be blind by dawn.

12 Kiger's legacy will probably be greater if he never plays another major league game. He'd be the only guy to have played in a postseason game, but never in a regular season game. He'd be an instant inductee in the Moonlight Graham Trivia Hall of Fame.
